Dice is a feature that changes how a conversation unfolds based on dice rolls. You can create situations shaped by chance, such as whether an attack succeeds or what events occur during an adventure.
Choose when to roll the dice and how to apply the numbers rolled.
Getting started
Create a dice setup in the Create → Dice tab.
Link it under Character editor → Episodes tab → Dice settings at the bottom of the episode you want to use it in.
Add a new dice setup in the Create → Dice tab.
Use a name that clearly describes its purpose, such as “Attack Check,” “Exploration Event,” or “Today's Fortune.”
You can choose from the following dice types.
Dice | How it rolls | Result range |
|---|---|---|
1D6 | One six-sided die | 1–6 |
2D6 | Two six-sided dice | 2–12 |
3D6 | Three six-sided dice | 3–18 |
1D20 | One twenty-sided die | 1–20 |
1D100 | One hundred-sided die | 1–100 |
When multiple dice are rolled, the total determines the outcome. For example, if 2D6 rolls a 3 and a 5, the result is 8.
Start with 1D6.
Its result range of 1–6 makes it easy to write simple rules. Once you are comfortable, try dice with wider ranges to create more varied outcomes.
You can choose between rolling at regular turn intervals and rolling when specific conditions are met.
The dice roll at the turn interval you set.
Example setting | Use case |
|---|---|
Every turn | Trigger a random event each turn |
Every 3 turns | Trigger periodic events during exploration |
Every 5 turns | Change the weather or surroundings at regular intervals |
The system checks the previous response and the player’s latest message, then rolls the dice if the situation matches the conditions you’ve set.
For an attack check, for example, you could write:
When the user attempts to attack an enemy
Make the condition specific about who does what and when.
Dice purpose | Example trigger condition |
|---|---|
Attack check | When the user attempts to attack an enemy |
Search check | When the user searches the surroundings for hidden items |
Persuasion check | When the user makes a request or tries to persuade someone |
You can also use widget content or Keyword Book shortcuts as trigger conditions. Since the system refers to the widget content shown in the previous response, it helps to specify “the widget in the previous response,” as in the examples below.
Example trigger conditions
When the outfit field in the widget in the previous response is set to “armor”
When the user uses the shortcut “!summary”
Trigger conditions and outcome instructions serve different purposes.
In the trigger condition, describe when to roll. In the outcome instructions, describe what happens based on the number rolled.
Use the outcome instructions to describe how the conversation should unfold based on the dice result.
For example, you could write a 1D6 attack check like this:
1–2: The attack misses.
3–4: The attack succeeds and deals minor damage.
5: The attack deals heavy damage.
6: The attack strikes a weak point, giving the attacker a major advantage in battle.
Instead of writing only “success” or “failure,” describe what actually happens in the conversation to make your intentions clearer.
Include every possible number for the selected dice, and make sure the ranges do not overlap.
For example, divide the outcomes across 1–6 for 1D6, 2–12 for 2D6, or 3–18 for 3D6.
Numbers you leave out use the rules for the nearest defined range.
If two ranges are equally close, the lower range is used. Covering the full range helps ensure that the conversation unfolds as intended.
Field | Requirements |
|---|---|
Name | Required; up to 100 characters |
Trigger condition | Required for condition-based rolls; up to 200 characters |
Outcome instructions | Required; up to 200 characters |
When you are finished, select Save.
To use a dice setup in a conversation, you need to link it to an episode.
Go to Character editor → Episodes tab.
Find Dice settings at the bottom of the episode you want to use it in.
Check the dice setups you want to use in the selection list.
Click Select to apply your choices, then check the linked list.
You can link up to 8 dice setups per character.
Each episode can use a different configuration. To use the same settings for other episodes, click Apply to All.
If multiple dice setups meet their trigger conditions at the same time, those higher in the list take priority. Place the ones you want to apply first at the top.
For example, if you want attack checks to take priority during combat, place them above dice setups that determine surrounding events.
Option | When enabled | When disabled |
|---|---|---|
Multiple dice per turn | Runs up to 3 eligible dice setups per turn, in priority order | Runs only the highest-priority eligible dice setup |
Public | Dice results can be viewed in the chat | Results are not displayed on screen |
Outcomes still apply even when result display is turned off.
You can hide the rolled numbers and results while letting the conversation continue according to the outcome.
After linking your dice setups and configuring the options, save the character.
When you start a conversation in an episode with linked dice, they will roll automatically at the specified turn intervals or when their trigger conditions are met.
For the attack check above, you could enter:
I draw my sword and attack the goblin.
When the trigger condition is met, the dice roll, and the response is generated using the outcome instructions for the number rolled.
If result display is enabled, click the dice result in the chat to see the details.
The number rolled on each die
The total when multiple dice were rolled
The applied outcome and outcome table
Reopening a result does not change the numbers.
The result screen shows the same saved roll. Opening it does not create a new roll.
If you regenerate a response that included a dice roll, the dice are rolled again using the same dice setup and rules. The same number may come up again.
If no dice were triggered in the original response, regenerating it will not trigger a new roll.
You can save up to 100 dice setups per account.
When deleting a dice setup that is in use, check its linked settings too.
If a deleted dice setup remains in an episode's linked list, remove that entry or replace it with another dice setup.
Select Share from the dice setup's more options menu.
Enable sharing and copy the link.
Anyone who receives the link can view the setup and import it into their own list.
Imported dice setups must also be linked to the episode where you want to use them before they can affect the conversation.
If dice do not appear or the expected outcome is not applied, check the following.
Issue | What to check |
|---|---|
I created a dice setup, but it does not run | Check that it is linked to the episode used in the conversation. |
My changes are not applied | Check that you saved the character after changing the settings. |
Condition-based rolls do not trigger | Check whether the current conversation meets the condition, and describe the triggering situation more specifically. |
I linked several dice setups, but only one runs | Check the multiple-dice option and each setup's trigger condition. |
Results do not appear on screen | Check the result display option. Outcomes still affect the conversation even when it is off. |
It says there are no linked dice setups | Check whether deleted setups remain in the list, and select the ones you want to use again. |
To check your settings
Set the dice to run every turn and enable result display. Once you confirm that they work correctly, adjust the turn interval or conditions as needed.
